No area guide would be complete for Central Oregon without paying homage to its mountain communities.
While most have never heard of Terrebonne, the tiny town at the crossroads to Smith Rock State Park, every outdoor and lifestyle magazine has Bend on its radar. Just 25 minutes south of Terrebonne, Bend has many of the amenities of cities triple its size, especially in the area of great food.
Much of Bend's explosion in growth over the last decade to its proximity to a world-class ski hill, Mt. Bachelor, as well as the surrounding Cascade Mountains.
With tourism as its main focus, it has year-round activities and festivals that attract visitors from around the world.
Another reason for Bend's fame is its micro brew industry. Bend loves beer.
For a town of just over 80,000 people, there are more breweries per capita in Bend than anywhere else in the country.Twenty-two and counting. There's even a website dedicated to it.
Redmond is also home to the 320 acre Expo Center and fairgrounds.
The Expo Center hosts the largest events this side of the mountains, from the Deschutes County Fair to rodeos, expositions and conferences.
